It’s refreshing to see 2025 off to a strong start for the video game industry, especially after what felt like a long stretch of stagnation. We’ve already seen major events like the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal and the Xbox Developer Direct, both of which offer plenty of insight into what’s coming next.
The Nintendo Switch 2 presentation confirmed much of what we had already heard about the console, and the announcement of a new Mario Kart was a standout. Some fans were hoping for more, but the overwhelming viewership and positive reception of the event—along with millions of upvotes—are telling signs of how much enthusiasm there is for the new console.
The Xbox Direct was another highlight, showcasing four promising games along with release dates that suggest we can expect even more exciting announcements later in the year. The news that PlatinumGames is working on Ninja Gaiden 4 was an unexpected treat, and the overall tone feels more positive than it has in quite some time, especially since Xbox has embraced a multiformat approach.
To me, the future looks clear: the Nintendo Switch 2 is poised to be a massive hit, and it seems like Xbox has effectively shifted to a third-party publisher role. While South of Midnight isn’t coming to PlayStation 5, I’m inclined to think it’s simply due to the timing of the game’s development before Microsoft fully embraced a policy of non-exclusivity.
Microsoft’s next-gen console may be on the horizon, but for now, the Xbox Series X/S feels stagnant. Their software sales are increasingly reliant on PlayStation 5 and PC, and it’s clear they’re trying to forge closer ties with Sony. However, Sony has always been a wary competitor, and their mistrust of Microsoft is unlikely to fade anytime soon—given that the Xbox was initially created to rival the PlayStation.
On the other hand, Microsoft has had a better rapport with Nintendo, and their partnership is likely to flourish. It seems inevitable that we’ll see Xbox titles on the Switch 2—games like Halo, Gears of War, and Fable might make their way to the platform, as Microsoft seeks to expand its audience and find new growth opportunities. While there have been rumors about this already, they don’t seem far-fetched, considering the state of the industry.
Looking at the broader picture, Nintendo has consistently outsold both Sony and Microsoft this generation and the last. Microsoft’s focus on the Switch 2 is two-pronged: they want to expand their reach by bringing their games to a successful console, but there’s also the underlying goal of outpacing Sony. If the Switch 2 proves more successful than the PS5, especially with better third-party support, it will create even more of a challenge for Sony’s position.
If Microsoft can lure gamers away from PlayStation, whether out of rivalry or opportunity, they stand to gain in the long run. There may not be room for three consoles in the market, but it’s clear there will always be space for two.
